Our own Home:
We
purchased this old farmhouse several years ago. We set
out to make it our own dream come true. The home was
built in 1908 and had been abandoned for years. It was
declared a house of no value and the realtor expected us
to tear it down. As you can see, we had different ideas
and the house has recently appeared in several home
magazine publications.
Our main
objective was to take this almost century old farmhouse
back to its original condition inside and out. The
interior walls were constructed of lathe and plaster
which was all torn out. We replaced wiring and plumbing
throughout the structure. All new windows and insulation
came next.
At one
point the house had been covered with ugly tan asbestos
siding. Upon its removal we found the original cedar lap
siding in excellent condition. The gable ends had
Dutch (fish scale) siding. What a find! We chose paint
colors in accordance with what was left of the existing
paint to keep it looking as it would have in 1908.
We had
torn down two old chimneys during the demolition process
which we cleaned and saved. They were used later to
build a Russian style fireplace in the kitchen.
New
footings and foundations were required to give this old
house a needed boost. Then we added the front porch. And
the real river rock exterior chimney looks as if it has
always been there.
Some of
the original hard wood floors were worth saving. So they
were stripped, sanded and refinished and lead to the
beautifully mastered new staircase. Old newel posts were
re-created in detail with new material, and custom made
stair treads take you upstairs to the guest and master
suites.
